you ever dreamed of being famous? Whether it be a movie star, television
broadcaster, rock star, or a radio personality? For most high school
students this is not possible. One of few exceptions can be found
at Mountain View High School.
Jim Blackwood, a 17 year old junior broadcasts his own radio show here in Tucson. Last fall Jim moved here from Maine where he was a long time "Grateful Dead" fan and listened to "Dead Shows" on the radio. Once in Tucson, Jim could find no "Dead Shows" on the radio, so he took the initiative to create his own. Jim began by looking in the yellow pages until he came across 91.7 FM KXCI, a public access station. Jim called the number listed and asked if KXCI would like someone to do a weekly "Dead Show". KXCI said yes, but first Jim had to get a Federal Communications Commission (F.C.C.) license. The license took about 1 1/2 months to secure and cost about $140. When asked what got Jim interested in radio, he said "It was like a spontaneous thing, it just happened." Radio is now a permanent part of Jim's life; his show "Dead Air" can be heard from eleven p.m. to midnight every Sunday night and even when not broadcasting Jim spends a lot of time at the station. The only plans Jim has for the future are to go to college and see many more "Dead Shows." If Jim has a job in the future he will most likely be in the music industry he says. For now, Jim is content with having his own show, going to school, having fun and maybe someday having a stranger recognize him as Jim Blackwood of "Dead Air." |
