Hot Spot - Club Congress 21st Anniversary * Spotlight - Dirty Dozen Brass Band

This week’s Hot Spot is Club Congress’ 21^st anniversary.

The three day music festival also features film screenings and acts as the official after-party for Tucson’s 231^st birthday. There are a boat load of great national and local artists performing Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Club Congress indoor and out, as well as across the street at the Rialto Theatre. Some highlights include:

Friday – Dave Alvin, Steve Wynn, Centro-Matic, Broken Horse, and the Weird Lovemakers.

Saturday – Fishbone, Pollo Elastico, Richard Buckner, Eric Bachman, River Roses, Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players, The Drakes and Al Perry's evening Bar-B-Q featuring Jello Biafra, Fish Karma, Lonna Kelly, David Insley, and Gila Bend.

Sunday - Doo Rag, Ian Moore, Steve Poltz, Billy Harvey, Four Killer Flats and Howe Gelb's evening Bar-B-Q featuring John Doe, Vic Chesnutt, Kristin Hersh, and Luca.

- Spotlight on the Dirty Dozen Brass Band’s new release “What’s Going On”.

It came out this Tuesday, the one year Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. It is an emotionally charged re-interpretation of Marvin Gaye’s classic protest album “What’s Going On”. As the band states in their press release, a year after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, a New Orleans institution asks the question we’ve all been waiting to hear answered. Guest’s include Chuck D on the title tracks as well as G. Love, Betty LaVette, Ivan Neville and Guru. This is classic New Orleans’ brass band, 2^nd line, soul, funk, hip-hop.

R.I.P. - Joseph Hill passed away on August 19^th while on tour in Europe. He was the front man of Culture, the seminal roots reggae group.
